- Formerly Department of Environment was responsible for commercial vehicle testing, but now it is looked after by Department of Transport.
What does VTN mean?
- Vehicle Testing Network is a brand name for testing centres, created by Department Of Transport.
What is required for the Commercial Vehicle test?
1. The original Certificate of Registration and Licensing, formerly called Vehicle Licensing Certificate (VLC), also called form RF-101, informally called the Tax Book or the Log Book

How much does it cost?- Current prices ex VAT were set by Department Of Transport on 29 October 2007. As of 01 December 2008, the new VAT rate of 21.5% came into effect, and the current prices are as follows:

I am importing commercial vehicle, what do I need to do?
1. Register vehicle with Motor Taxation Office
2. Weigh vehicle to determine GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight)
3. Carry out DOT test
4. HGVs have to meet more standards, you would need to Calibrate Tachograph, check Road Speed Limiter, fit Vehicle Plate, fit traffic markings. If you require more information, ring us for details.
What is Certificate of Roadworthiness?
- DOT testing centre issues DOT Certificate, which must be produced to Motor Taxation office when buying Road Tax. Motor Taxation office will take in your DOT Certificate and produce Certificate of Roadworthiness.
There is no spare tyre in my van, will it pass the DOT test?
- yes. however, if you have the spare tyre loose in the back of the vehicle, and not in its designed location, it will fail the DOT test.
Do I have to remove tools and items from the cargo area for the DOT test?
- no.
How often is a DOT test required?
- All Commercial vehicles now require DOT to be carried out every year.
I have a 4x4 'jeep', do I need NCT or DOT?
- if your vehicle type is 'private' you need to test it at NCT centre, if your vehicle type is 'commercial' you need to test it at DOT centre.
If my commercial vehicle fails the DOT test, when can I re-test it, and how much it will cost?
- You can re-test vehicle within two weeks for a charge of 50% of the original test, e.g. €43.05 for LGV. If the retest is only visual, re-test fee is waived. After two weeks full test has to be carried out, and full fee is charged.
